A new discovery restoring vision
In the United Kingdom, a group of blind patients regained the ability to read thanks to a special eye device. The results of the international study conducted at a London hospital have drawn great attention in the medical world. Doctors describe the method as “life-changing technology.”

A 70-year-old patient named Sheila Irvine, who had been blind for more than 30 years, said the new device now allows her to read books, solve crosswords, and read letters. “It’s a wonderful feeling. Joy has returned to my life,” Irvine said.

This technology is mainly intended for patients suffering from a condition known as age-related macular degeneration. The disease damages the central part of the retina, reducing a person’s ability to see color and fine details. Currently, more than five million people worldwide are affected by this condition.

The new procedure involves placing a very small electronic plate under the retina. A camera built into special glasses sends images to this plate through infrared light, which then transmits the information back to the brain. As a result, patients are able to see again. In the study, 27 out of 32 participants regained the ability to read.

According to Dr. Mahi Muqit, this technology may also help treat other eye diseases in the future. For now, the method is still being tested, but it is planned to be offered to patients through the UK healthcare system in the coming years.
