A fever is a natural sign of the body’s defense against illness. It usually appears when viruses or bacteria enter the body. When body temperature rises, it creates an unfavorable environment for microbes, preventing them from multiplying quickly. Therefore, a mild fever is considered the body’s way of protecting itself.
In ancient times, people thought fever was a separate disease. They tried to treat it by bloodletting or fasting. After the famous scientist Louis Pasteur discovered germ theory, it became clear that fever is not a disease itself, but the body’s response to infection.
According to doctors, a body temperature above 38 degrees is considered a fever. With a mild fever, the body can usually fight the illness on its own. But if the temperature rises above 40 degrees, it can be dangerous. In such cases, dehydration, fainting, or convulsions may occur.
Fever is more common in children because their temperature control system is not yet fully developed. That’s why their temperature can rise and fall quickly. However, if the fever lasts long or is accompanied by pain, cough, or fatigue, a doctor should be consulted.
Experts advise that mild fever should not always be reduced. Let the body fight the illness naturally. But if the condition worsens, seek medical help immediately, as self-treatment can sometimes be dangerous to your health.
