Scientists from the University of California have found that people who have suffered from influenza or COVID-19 may face a sharply increased risk of heart attack.
The study showed that in people who have experienced viral infections, the cardiovascular system is under significant stress for several weeks after recovery. This greatly increases the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke.
Researchers analyzed more than 52,000 scientific papers and selected 155 of the most reliable ones for detailed review. As a result, it was found that within one month after having the flu, the risk of heart attack increases fourfold, while the risk of stroke rises fivefold. COVID-19 increases these risks threefold, and its effects may persist for up to a year.
According to Professor Kosuke Kawai of the University of California, viral infections trigger strong inflammation in the body and increase blood clotting. This process can continue even after recovery, placing additional stress on the heart and blood vessels.
Experts emphasize that viral diseases pose a serious danger not only to the respiratory system but also to the heart and circulatory system, and they recommend getting vaccinated against the flu every year.
