The spread of the Marburg virus has been confirmed in Ethiopia for the first time. The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed nine cases in the Omo province, a region bordering South Sudan.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised Ethiopia's healthcare system for its "quick and transparent response to the epidemic." According to him, this demonstrates the country's serious approach to controlling the virus.
Marburg virus belongs to the Ebola family and usually presents with fever, rash, and severe bleeding. The virus is mainly transmitted through the body fluids of an infected person or items contaminated with them.
According to experts, there is currently no specific medicine or vaccine for Marburg, and treatment is based only on symptomatic measures - rest, fluid delivery, and support measures.
The head of the African CDC, Jan Kaseya, noted that the situation in Ethiopia is "seriously alarming" due to the fact that it occurred on the border with South Sudan and the weakness of the local healthcare system.
The Marburg virus has previously been recorded in Africa in Uganda, Tanzania, and Guinea, and the mortality rate can reach up to 90%.
