This very distressing news about the Bojek family, who traveled from Germany to Turkey, caused widespread discussion in local and international media. A family of four, 32-year-old Sarvat Bujek, her husband, 27-year-old Chigdam Bujek, and their children, 6-year-old Muhammad and 3-year-old Masal, who arrived in Istanbul with the intention of traveling, died from street food poisoning. This tragedy caused great distress not only in Turkey, but also in Germany.
The family settled in the "Harbour Suites Old City" hotel in Istanbul's busiest Fatih district on November 9. At first, it all started like a simple journey. However, on November 11, they go to the famous Ortakoy area and eat street food such as mussels, soup, sausage, chicken, and kumpir. By evening, their condition began to worsen. The family is urgently hospitalized and treated based on symptoms of food poisoning.
They were discharged from the hospital because they started to feel a little better, but upon returning to the hotel, their condition worsened again. Even after being re-hospitalized, the treatment was insufficient: on November 12, two children died. Only two days later, on November 14th, did his mother, and shortly after, his father, Sarvat Bojek, also pass away.
Following the tragedy, the Istanbul Prosecutor General's Office opened a criminal case. As part of the investigation, several individuals were detained - a midi store, a Turkish dessert seller, the owner of a restaurant where a family dined, as well as hotel staff and a disinfection service worker - a total of 11 people. The restaurant has been sealed, and the hotel has been completely evacuated.
Police and specialists have taken samples from the scene, and security camera footage is being studied. Tests sent to the forensic laboratory are being conducted to determine the causes of death in family members. Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç emphasized that all inspections are being carried out very carefully.
In addition, two more tourists were hospitalized at the hotel where the family was staying due to nausea and vomiting. A third person, who was in the same room with them, was also examined due to a decrease in heart rate.
Although an official conclusion has not yet been issued, investigators are gathering all the information to determine which food or what factor caused this terrible tragedy. Investigations in Istanbul are ongoing.
