Mosques now broadcast emergency alerts

The United Nations Development Programme, together with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations, has introduced a new public warning system designed to expand early emergency alerts. Under the project, special equipment is being installed at mosques so urgent messages can be broadcast through outdoor loudspeakers.
So far, 272 mosques in the Jizzakh, Kashkadarya, Namangan, Samarkand, Syrdarya, Tashkent and Fergana regions have been equipped with the system. Officials say the broadcast range varies from 500 meters to 2,000 meters, allowing alerts to reach people living nearby in a short time.
One of the main advantages of the system is its ability to continue operating even during power cuts and communication outages. This is expected to help prevent disruptions in the delivery of critical information during emergencies, when timely warnings are especially important.
According to the project estimates, the new approach could help deliver alerts to nearly 6.5 million people. The initiative is aimed at improving community safety and making sure residents receive fast warnings when dangerous situations arise.
