Last season, Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal was identified as the La Liga player who faced the most insults and hateful abuse on social media. This was stated in an analysis prepared by Spain’s OBERAXE center, which monitors cases of racism and xenophobia.
According to the report, monitoring detected more than 33,000 insulting and hate-inciting posts. About one third of them were removed by social media platforms. Notably, 60% of all negative comments identified were directed specifically at Yamal.
Second on the list was Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, accounting for nearly 29% of all hateful posts. Kylian Mbappe and Alex Balde (3% each), as well as Brahim Diaz and Inyaki Williams (2% each), were also among the most abused players.
Experts say the number of hateful comments peaked during the El Clasico match held on October 27–28, 2024. Negative activity also surged around Mallorca vs Barcelona, Atletico vs Real, Spanish Super Cup games, and topics related to some players fasting during Ramadan.
The study found that those suffering most from online hate are footballers from North Africa (42%) and Muslim players (41%). This shows that serious problems persist in football not only on the pitch, but also in the information space.
