Carlsen Names Sindarov a Favorite, Considers Gukesh Weaker opponent

Carlsen rates Sindarov as favorite, Gukesh as weaker

World chess star and multiple-time champion Magnus Carlsen shared his thoughts on the rivalry between Javokhir Sindarov and Dommaraju Gukesh. His comments have sparked significant discussion within the chess community.

According to Carlsen, it is difficult not to see Sindarov as the clear favorite in the current situation. In his view, any outcome is possible in the struggle for the world title, but the most interesting aspect is the performance Sindarov will deliver in the near future.

The Norwegian Grandmaster also commented on the differences between Sindarov and Gukesh. He noted that while Gukesh displays certain clear deficiencies in his understanding of the game, such issues are almost invisible in Sindarov's play. Consequently, he rated the Uzbek chess player as a much more universal competitor.

"Sindarov is quite different from Gukesh. There are clearly visible flaws in Gukesh's understanding of the game, whereas in Sindarov, this is not so noticeable. He is a much more universal chess player," Carlsen stated.

Carlsen shared another significant point: even if Sindarov were to become world champion, it would not motivate him to return to the pursuit of the world title in the classical format. He stated that he currently only participates in tournaments that interest him personally.

“I make my decisions based on my own desires, not based on the expectations of others. I have achieved my goals; the classical world championship no longer interests me,” Carlsen said.

In short, Carlsen's statement has further bolstered confidence in Sindarov, positioning him as one of the leaders of the new generation in world chess.
