Skype to be discontinued on May 5 – Microsoft urges users to switch to Teams
Microsoft has announced that Skype will be officially discontinued on May 5, 2025. The company is encouraging users to switch to Microsoft Teams, a platform designed primarily for business and team collaboration.

Users can log into Teams with their Skype credentials, and all contacts and messages will be automatically transferred.

Limitations of the free version of Teams:
Group calls with up to 100 participants
Call duration limited to 60 minutes
5 GB of cloud storage
Longer calls and additional features will require a paid subscription.

Why is Microsoft shutting down Skype?
Skype was launched in 2003 and acquired by Microsoft in 2011 for $8.5 billion. However, in recent years, services like Zoom, WhatsApp, and Discord have significantly outpaced Skype, leading Microsoft to focus on developing Teams.

Users can export their Skype data until May 5, 2025.
