Airbus won’t launch hydrogen plane by 2035
Airbus will not deliver a hydrogen-powered aircraft by 2035 as initially planned, according to Wylsa.com.

The company began developing a zero-emissions aircraft in 2020, with hopes of launching three hydrogen-powered models over the next 15 years. Despite investing €1.7 billion, Airbus has not been able to produce a commercially viable hydrogen engine.

Key challenges include hydrogen fuel production, transportation, and safe storage. Moreover, many industry partners lost interest in supporting hydrogen deployment.

In February 2024, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury admitted that no competitive aircraft had emerged from the project. By March, he compared the effort to the Concorde—technologically advanced but commercially unsustainable.

The green aviation initiative still exists within Airbus, but with reduced funding and a downsized engineering team.
