Tech giant Microsoft has unveiled one of the latest advances in artificial intelligence — an innovative weather forecasting system called Aurora. This system not only works on a new approach, but also has significant advantages in terms of accuracy, efficiency and cost-effectiveness compared to existing methods.
Archival data instead of equations
Existing weather models are based on physical equations of the atmosphere, which requires significant computing resources. Microsoft's Aurora model, however, abandons such methods and is trained only on historical weather data. This, in turn, reduces computational costs by 10-100 times. At the same time, the forecast accuracy remains very high.
More accurate than the European Center for 10-day forecasts
Research has shown that the Aurora model outperformed the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) by 92% in 10-day forecasts. This shows how effective artificial intelligence is in predicting natural processes.
Predicted the typhoons of 2023
The Aurora model correctly predicted all major typhoons in 2023. In particular, the direction and time of strengthening of Typhoon Doksuri were accurately determined. While official weather centers predicted that it would head towards Taiwan, Aurora predicted that it would approach the Philippines.
A revolution in weather forecasting: real-time, anywhere
According to Professor Paris Perdikaris of the University of Pennsylvania, this is the first time that artificial intelligence has produced more accurate results than existing forecast centers. In the next 10 years, such AI models will switch to using real-time data from satellites and weather stations. This will allow us to provide accurate weather information in any region.
A new stage in commerce
Microsoft plans to soon introduce the Aurora model for commercial purposes. Through special APIs and integration capabilities, it is expected to serve as a reliable forecasting base for logistics, aviation, the agricultural sector, energy and other industries.
