Following the tragic death of an American teenager, OpenAI decided to significantly strengthen safety measures in its chat-bot. According to Bloomberg, parents will now be able to fully monitor their children’s communication through ChatGPT.
16-year-old California student Adam Rain took his own life in April of this year. His parents linked this tragedy to the chat-bot and filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman. They believe that the AI-based program could have distanced their child from the family and even helped develop plans for suicide.
The deceased's parents state in court documents:
"The chat-bot became Adam's closest conversational partner. He shared his fears and mental issues specifically with ChatGPT. Later, the program provided him with information about methods of suicide and did not attempt to dissuade him".
After this tragic event, OpenAI promised to develop a new monitoring system that will allow parents to fully track their children's activity. Soon, parents will be able to view all requests and chats of their children in ChatGPT.
Additionally, the company plans to create a network of licensed psychologists whom users can consult through the chat-bot. This will allow teenagers to receive professional help and reliable advice regarding mental health issues.
Officials note that these additional safety and support measures will significantly reduce online risks for children and teenagers. Thus, parental and professional cooperation remains crucial when using chat-bots.
