The US government has imposed restrictions on the operations of major South Korean chipmakers — Samsung and SK Hynix — in China. From now on, they must obtain a special license to import US equipment.
This decision is part of the broad restrictions introduced against China in 2022. Previously, Samsung and SK Hynix had been granted exemptions from these rules. Now those exemptions have been revoked.
The US government stated that it will allow the operation of existing plants but will not issue licenses for their expansion or the introduction of new technologies. This could pose a major obstacle for the companies.
This decision also affects US chip equipment manufacturers. Companies such as KLA Corp, Lam Research, and Applied Materials may lose sales in the Chinese market. Their shares have already declined.
According to experts, this move may support local manufacturers in China’s domestic market.
