Developer successfully hacked into the BIOS system of a 30-year-old S3 video card

The author of the “Bits und Bolts” YouTube channel demonstrated a way to solve a long-standing technical problem in 30-year-old S3 video cards. The point is that the VBIOS system in these devices displayed dark gray instead of black so that the image would not become too dark on old monitors. Ixbt.com reports.
On modern displays, this feature significantly worsens image quality and reduces contrast. The enthusiast experimented with a “S3 Virge DX” accelerator with 4 MB of memory and, using special programs, identified the necessary section in the VBIOS system.
At first, he tried to change the values in memory itself, then downloaded the firmware and edited it in a HEX editor. In order for the video card to accept the modified program, the checksum also had to be updated.
As a result, the video card began outputting true deep black instead of gray. The author showed that he achieved the expected result by changing the indicator at the VBIOS level from 3F to 1F.
