Medicare's new payment model is being adapted for artificial intelligence

For seven years, Neil Batlivala has been developing a medical company serving a patient segment overlooked by Silicon Valley. His company, Pair Team, was recently accepted into the ACCESS program established by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This program aims to test AI-driven medical care on a federal scale. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reports .
Unlike traditional medical services, the ACCESS program makes payments based on treatment outcomes rather than the time spent with a doctor. This model provides financial incentives when specific health goals, such as lowering blood pressure or reducing pain, are achieved. The program covers conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and depression.
The most important aspect of the new system is that it creates a payment mechanism for artificial intelligence agents. Previously, there was no payment system for technologies that monitor patients between visits, call them, or track medication adherence. Now, the government is opening new opportunities for AI innovation in regulated sectors.
The program includes wearable device manufacturers like Whoop and virtual care startups. Since 2019, Pair Team has been assisting patients with chronic illnesses who face housing and food insecurity. According to Batlivala, this change will fundamentally reform healthcare payment models.
