Machdyne FERRIT: A unique USB drive that stores data for up to 200 years

Machdyne has introduced the new FERRIT USB drive based on F-RAM (ferroelectric RAM) technology. Unlike traditional NAND flash memory, this device is designed to operate in extreme conditions and store data for up to 200 years. This is reported by Ixbt.com .

The main advantage of FERRIT memory is its high resistance to radiation and virtually unlimited rewrite cycles. Therefore, the device is an ideal solution for the space industry, military systems, and long-term archiving of critical technical documentation.

The device features a modular design, equipped with a Raspberry Pi RP2040 microcontroller and a FERRIT-CY controller. Connecting via a USB-C port, this memory functions as a standard external drive without requiring additional drivers. In its maximum configuration, the capacity can reach up to 256 MB.

The open-source nature of the project is also noteworthy: all schematics, firmware, and documentation are published on the GitHub platform. However, due to the complexity of the technology, the device is not cheap — a full 256 MB kit is estimated at approximately $6,400.
