Russia's largest 1,253 MW nuclear reactor launched

Russia has officially launched the first power unit of the Kursk AES-2 station, equipped with a VVER-TOI reactor, which has a capacity of 1253 MW, making it the most powerful facility in the country's nuclear energy sector. The unit began supplying electricity to the market on May 1, following the signing of necessary documents by the state corporation Rosatom. Over 90,000 people and nearly 250 contractors were involved in the construction of this energy block. Additionally, plans are in place to build three more similar blocks at the site in the coming years, transitioning the station to next-generation reactors.
The first power unit of the Kursk NPP-2 station, equipped with a VVER-TOI reactor, has been officially launched in Russia. After the "Rosatom" state corporation signed all necessary documents, the unit entered the electricity market starting May 1. Ixbt.com reports this.
The new power unit has become the most powerful facility in Russian nuclear energy. Its electrical capacity is 1253 MW.
This unit is intended to provide additional generation capacity for the country's unified energy system.
According to Aleksey Likhachev, Director General of "Rosatom," the construction work was carried out by a large team. More than 90,000 people and about 250 contracting organizations participated in the project.
Kursk NPP-2 will not be limited to just one power unit. In the coming years, there are plans to build three more such units at the site.
After that, the station is expected to fully transition to new-generation reactors.
