The rarest animal of Uzbekistan is disappearing

The striped hyena, which we are accustomed to seeing in African savannas, actually exists in Uzbekistan. However, it is so rare that, according to experts, its number throughout the country does not exceed 30-40 specimens. Linear hyena is currently found only in the mountainous regions of the Surkhandarya region.
This issue was widely discussed at the event "Linear Hyena at Risk," held within the framework of the 20th meeting of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). The event was held in cooperation between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. It was noted that this species plays an important "sanitary" role in the global ecosystem, but it still receives insufficient attention.

During the event, the need to strengthen international cooperation in the following key areas was noted:
determination of the transboundary state of linear hyena;
Review of status in the IUCN Red List;
inclusion of financing and protection measures in national strategies.
Although linear hyena is of immeasurable importance for healthy ecosystems and disease prevention, it is still misinterpreted as an "incomprehensible predator." The organizers of the event emphasized the need to present it as a partner of ecosystems.
Hyena is not dangerous to humans, but it is sometimes killed by shepherds when it attacks livestock. Therefore, experts advocate for reducing the threat to this species by paying compensation to livestock breeders.
Until now, this creature has barely been captured on camera traps. It was only recorded on video by shepherds. This shows how rare and cautious it is.
