The criminal case was opened in 2022. At that time, the courier told police that several dogs were kept chained in one of the houses near Atlanta where he delivered the order. After that, police officers conducted a search and found 107 pit bulls. According to the prosecutor's office, some of the dogs were very emaciated.

Vincent Burrell was arrested on the same day of the search. Police found evidence that the pit bulls were sent to dog fights. All the animals were handed over to the Animal Welfare Foundation. Veterinarians confirmed that some of the dogs had scars from fights and that some of their teeth had been removed.

The US Supreme Court sentenced Vincent Burrell to 475 years in prison based on a jury verdict. Burrell was found guilty of 93 counts of organizing dog fights and 10 counts of cruelty to animals.
