The creation of a Palestinian state is the basis for solving many problems in the Middle East. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the 14th Middle East Conference of the Valdai Discussion Club.

"The basis of all (Middle East) problems is still the creation of a Palestinian state. Numerous resolutions of the UN General Assembly and the Security Council have been adopted on this issue. The two-state solution is supported by all external players, including the Biden administration. The Trump administration, in my opinion, has not yet clearly stated its position on this issue," the Russian Foreign Minister said.

Moscow has consistently supported the creation of a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the formula approved by the UN Security Council.

The diplomat also spoke about the problems in implementing the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. According to him, Moscow is receiving relevant signals.

"We are already receiving signals that there will be problems in the second stage (ceasefire - ed.) and they have probably already begun, because we are not fully satisfied with the Israeli ruling circles' fulfillment of Hamas' obligations under the first stage, so we are not doing anything, there are reports that we will not exclude it," Lavrov said.

He noted that Israel is continuing its military operations in the West Bank without hesitation. In addition, according to Lavrov, "there is a lot of reliable information that Israel's plans, in addition to expelling the Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, also include full control over the northwestern bank of the Jordan River."

"Israel's plans, as experts write and no one denies, should remain in Lebanese territory. Of course, the Syrian Golan Heights can now be considered lost territory from the point of view of a full-fledged stable Arab-Israeli agreement with the arrival of Donald Trump, who declared them part of Israel in his first term," the Russian Foreign Minister added.

Sergey Lavrov also commented on the West's attempts to distance Russia, China and Iran from Syria. In his opinion, they are unlikely to be made with good intentions.

"Attempts to exclude Russia, China and Iran from the process of external support for the settlement of Syria are not connected with good intentions, but nevertheless reveal the West's plans to relegate its opponents to secondary positions," the Russian minister said.

According to him, Moscow sees problems with the new Syrian government.

"Of course, there are big problems in Syria, including the problem with the government currently embodied by its leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, and the problems with the dialogue and mutual understanding between them, which were part of this structure and were part of after the change of power in Syria. It is also necessary to think about the future of the Syrian people, to develop a national dialogue, and to do this, it is necessary to unite the efforts of all external players, in a very active and constructive way, without trying to score geopolitical points," Lavrov said.
