Russia has expressed its readiness to hold direct talks with Zelensky
Even if Vladimir Putin considers the Ukrainian president to be "illegitimate," Russia will not refuse to hold talks with Volodymyr Zelensky. This was announced by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

"Mr. Zelensky has de jure big problems from the point of view of his legitimacy, but even so, the Russian side is open to negotiations," Peskov said.

At the same time, he stressed, the Ukrainian leadership must "show interest" in this and lift the legislative ban on contacts with Putin. Otherwise, the Kremlin will not take Zelensky's statement about his readiness for direct talks with the Russian president seriously.

"Readiness must be based on something... Therefore, for now, this cannot be perceived as anything other than empty talk," Peskov said.

The Ukrainian president said on February 4 that he was ready to hold direct talks with Putin to end the war. “If this is the only configuration for Ukrainians to achieve peace and not lose people, then of course we will go for it,” Zelensky said. At the same time, he stressed that he would not be “kind” to Putin, as he considers him an “enemy.” Zelensky added that in addition to Ukraine and Russia, the US and the EU should also be at the negotiating table.

Zelensky also said in an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan that nuclear weapons could be a sufficient security guarantee if Ukraine is not accepted into NATO. Zelensky noted that if Ukraine is not a member of NATO, “Putin must completely leave the country,” after which Kiev would raise the issue of financial compensation for all losses.
