Three buses parked in a parking lot in the Israeli city of Bat Yam, south of Tel Aviv, exploded on the evening of February 20. Two more explosive devices were defused. The Times of Israel reported this.
According to preliminary information, there were no deaths or injuries. The Bat Yam administration said that the buses “arrived at the parking lot a minute before the explosion.”
The timers of all five bombs, each containing 5 kilograms of explosives, were programmed to go off at the same time on the morning of February 21, the report said.
According to an Israeli security source, police later found four more explosive devices on buses in the cities of Bat Yam and Holon. Officials are calling the incident an attempt to carry out a “strategic terrorist attack.” The Israel Defense Forces are investigating the incident together with the General Security Service.
According to Israeli media reports, at least one unexploded explosive device was found with the inscription “Revenge for Tulkarm” — a city in the West Bank where the Israeli army has been conducting a large-scale operation called “Iron Wall” since January 21.
Bus drivers across Israel have been ordered to thoroughly inspect buses before starting their journeys. Security measures have been tightened at Ben-Gurion Airport.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said he had already ordered the army to "increase counter-terrorism activity in the Tulkarm refugee camp, as well as in all refugee camps in Judea and Samaria."
