Scientists from the University of Keele in the UK have identified the cause of cryptogenic strokes - strokes of unknown origin - in people under 50 years old. The results of the study were published in the journal Neurology Open Access.
Cryptogenic strokes remain a mystery to medical professionals: the cause of blood vessel blockage is unknown. Weakness, speech and vision problems are symptoms of the disease, which can end in death.
The scientists conducted an experiment involving 546 people aged 18-49 - stroke victims and healthy people. The results of the analysis showed that smoking is the main risk factor for stroke. 33% of the stroke patients in the group were smokers.
After adjusting for risk factors (alcohol consumption, blood pressure and education level), smokers were twice as likely to have a stroke. The risk was three times higher among men and almost four times higher among people aged 45-49. The risk of stroke was four to seven times higher among those who smoked more than 20 packs of cigarettes a year.
Scientists have called for increased anti-smoking measures to reduce stroke rates.
Earlier, British researchers estimated that people spend an average of more than 2 hours a week smoking, which amounts to 92 hours a year. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
