The whole world of politics still cannot get over the impact of the dispute between Trump and Zelensky that took place in the White House on the last day of winter. Whatever happens, it remains in the shadow of that conflict. No matter how much Trump, Vance and Zelensky try to talk about other topics in their public speeches after the "explosion" in the Oval Office, the conversation still returns to that topic.
Let's dwell on what important statements were made after the dispute between the US and Ukrainian presidents.
"The doors are still open"
US Vice President J.D. Vance gave an interview to the Republican platform Fox News. Speaking about the meeting with Zelensky, Vance said that for the first half hour, Trump remained diplomatic and did not get upset when the Ukrainian president said things he did not like, but that the situation got out of hand when Zelensky continued in that vein. Vance blamed Zelensky for the beginning of the conflict.
According to the US vice president, Zelensky later returned to the White House and wanted to talk to Trump, but Trump said there was no point in doing so. However, Vance also said that the door is open for the resumption of dialogue between Trump and Zelensky.
“President Trump has made it clear that the door is still open for dialogue. But for that, Zelensky must be ready to talk about peace. You cannot go to the Oval Office and not even discuss the details of a peace agreement. If they want peace, I think President Trump will pick up the phone without hesitation,” said Vance.
What did Trump say?
Donald Trump once again took part in a briefing with reporters. He was asked if it was possible to save the mineral resources agreement with Ukraine. The US president replied, "Yes." Then he was asked what Zelensky should do to restore dialogue.
"He should be a little grateful, because the United States was there for him in the most difficult day. We helped them more than Europe. And yet they are an obstacle for Europe. Ukraine is an important country for Europe, and I'm not criticizing Europe by saying this, they just acted much more wisely than Biden. I want everything to end quickly. The war should not drag on for years. In an interview with the AP, which I don't like, Zelensky said that the war will last a long time. Let him be mistaken," Trump said.
Will Zelensky apologize?
The future Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, said an interesting thing about the scandal in the Oval Office. "I re-watched the meeting in the White House several times and was surprised by the tone of the conversation. Usually, the open part of such meetings lasts a few minutes, but it was different there. It was clear that this was an organized escalation,” Merz was quoted as saying by “European Truth”. According to the future leader of Germany, the scandal in the Oval Office “is a matter for the conscience of the current government in the United States.”
These days, calls are being made in America that Zelensky should apologize to Trump on camera. In particular, Secretary of State Marco Rubio is of the same opinion. Journalists even asked Trump whether Zelensky should apologize. However, the BBC, citing its sources, writes that Zelensky does not intend to apologize to Trump. Zelensky himself, who gave an interview to Fox News on the day of the scandal, said that he had done nothing to apologize.
