
On the evening of March 5, Russian forces launched a missile strike on the city of Kryvyi Rih in the Dnipropetrovsk region of Ukraine. As a result of the attack, a five-story hotel was destroyed, at least two people were killed and 29 civilians were injured. This was reported by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
According to the chairman of the Kryvyi Rih Defense Council, Oleksandr Vilkul, 20 of the injured are in serious condition. The head of the Dnipropetrovsk region administration, Serhiy Lysak, confirmed that a child was among the injured.
People may be trapped under the rubble
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported that search and rescue operations are underway at the scene of the crash. There may still be people trapped under the rubble.
Shortly before the strike, the Ukrainian Air Force had warned of the use of ballistic missiles by Russia and the threat to targets in Kryvyi Rih. Later that day, the Ukrainian military declared a threat from Russian drones and guided bombs in the Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Sumy, Kharkiv and Chernihiv regions.
Kryvyi Rih is Zelensky's hometown
Kryvyi Rih is the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Russian forces have been shelling the city regularly since the start of the full-scale war.
On the evening of February 23, Kryvyi Rih was also hit by a missile strike. That attack killed one person and wounded five.
Kryvyi Rih, located about 70 kilometers northwest of the front line, is one of the areas most frequently targeted by Russian forces.
Situation after the attack
Rescue efforts are currently underway in the city. Officials do not deny that the death toll may rise. The Ukrainian government is calling on the international community to take stronger measures against Russian attacks.
