Russia is increasing pressure in the Kursk region — British intelligence
The UK Ministry of Defence reported in its daily intelligence update on March 10 that the Russian army has concentrated its main offensive efforts in the Kursk region. This, in turn, is creating an opportunity for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to launch counteroffensives in other areas of the front.

How is Russia Operating in the Kursk Region?

According to British military intelligence, Russian forces are increasing pressure on Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region by attacking from three directions—west, north, and east. It is estimated that the Ukrainian army currently controls approximately 300 square kilometers of territory.

In other areas of the front, the intensity of Russian attacks has decreased compared to the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025. This has allowed Ukrainian forces, particularly in the Pokrovsk direction in the Donetsk region, to intensify counterattacks. Ukrainian troops have reportedly conducted successful offensives near the villages of Peschane, Udachne, and Shevchenko, as well as south of the strategic T-0506 highway.

"Ukraine’s counterattack capability has improved due to a reduction in the number of Russian ground offensive operations. Additionally, Russian supply lines in the Pokrovsk direction have been weakened by Ukrainian drone strikes," the UK intelligence report states.

Russia Claims Control Over Several Villages in the Kursk Region

On March 9, Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced that its forces had "liberated" the villages of Malaya Loknya, Cherkasskoye Porechnoye, and Kositsa in the Kursk region. Additionally, videos surfaced online showing Russian soldiers in the village of Martynovka, although the Russian government has not officially declared control over this area. These reports were confirmed by the analytical center DeepState OSINT, which is close to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense.

Over the past two days, Russian troops have also claimed control over the villages of Lebedevka, Viktorovka, Nikolaevka, and Staraya Sorochina in the Kursk region, as well as the village of Novenkoe in Ukraine’s Sumy region.

Andriy Demchenko, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service, stated that Russian forces are attempting to secure their positions along the Ukrainian border in the Sumy region.

"The enemy is trying to create an active combat zone inside Ukraine where it can establish strongholds," he said.

According to Demchenko, Russian attacks in the Novenkoe area are aimed at blocking key logistical routes that supply Ukrainian forces operating in the Kursk region.

How is Ukraine Responding on the Frontline?

Ukraine’s Armed Forces report that Russian attacks in the Kursk region have relieved pressure on other areas of the front, allowing for intensified counteroffensives near Pokrovsk.

Ukrainian forces have been targeting Russian supply lines with drones, weakening the enemy’s ability to sustain its offensives. This strategy is helping Ukraine strengthen its frontline positions.

Russia’s increased attacks in the Kursk region appear to be an effort to complicate Ukraine’s strategy in the Donetsk and Sumy directions. However, Ukraine is capitalizing on the opportunity to counterattack in areas where Russian pressure has eased.

For now, Ukraine’s military leadership has not officially commented on the situation in the Kursk region but continues to strike Russian positions in other directions.

The battlefield situation indicates that while Russia aims to secure a strategic advantage in Kursk, Ukraine is gaining new opportunities to launch counteroffensives in different sectors of the front.
