British intelligence: How many soldiers did the Russian army lose in the war?
According to British intelligence, since the start of the war against Ukraine in 2022, the Russian army may have lost almost 900,000 people, including killed and wounded. This is stated in a new report by the British Ministry of Defense.

The largest losses

London estimates that Russian casualties reached 200-250,000 soldiers. This is the largest military loss for Russia since World War II.

British intelligence has emphasized that the Russian leadership is putting the goals of the war above the lives of its soldiers. The report says the Kremlin is prepared to accept high levels of casualties as long as it does not undermine public support and the ability to continue mobilizing remains.

Forced mobilization of ethnic minorities

The report notes that the Russian government is increasingly using soldiers from poorer regions in the war. Mobilization rates are low in large cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg, but forced mobilization is much higher in areas with large ethnic minority populations.

"Soldiers from poorer regions are being sent to the front disproportionately more often," the British government report says.

Pentagon and independent estimates

In November 2024, the Pentagon estimated total Russian military casualties at 615,000.

The British Ministry of Defense in June 2024 recorded Russian losses of 610 thousand people - of whom 200 thousand were killed and more than 400 thousand were wounded.

Vladimir Putin announced in June of this year that the Russian army had lost 135 thousand soldiers.

Independent journalistic reports

Journalists from the BBC Russian Service and Mediazona identified 95,026 Russian soldiers and officers who died.

In January-February 2024, 5,007 new victims were added to this list. Also, according to their calculations, 21-23.5 thousand soldiers died in the armed forces of the DPRK and the LPR. Among them are many who were forcibly mobilized and sent to the front with minimal training.

Data from international analysts and independent sources indicate that the losses of the Russian army are very high. The Kremlin has so far only published its own calculations without officially confirming these numbers. This can further strengthen the different positions on information attacks and war in Russia.
