Chinese woman receives $35,000 in compensation from ex-husband for housework she did

One of the divorce proceedings in China ended in a strange situation. A woman demanded compensation from her ex-husband for years of housework. She asked for 7 thousand dollars, but the court ruled to award her 35 thousand dollars. This was reported by "Pravila Zhizni" with reference to The China Morning Post.

Circumstances leading to the divorce

The couple married in 2011 and had a child. However, in October 2022, after serious arguments over the child's education, the woman finally filed for divorce.

During the divorce proceedings, a woman named Hu demanded custody of her daughter, an equal division of common property, and compensation of 7 thousand dollars for housework. She insisted that she was the only one doing the housework and raising the children, and that she did not receive any help from her husband.

Court recognizes the value of housework

During the trial, the assistant judge ruled, citing Chinese law, that "all household chores should be divided equally between husband and wife."

According to China's civil code, if one of the parties during the marriage spends more time on housework and raising children, the other party must pay him or her compensation upon divorce.

As a result, the court ruled to pay $35,000 in compensation instead of $7,000. This decision cannot be appealed.

Legal significance

This decision shows that housework and raising children are recognized as work in China. Such examples are rare in societies where housework is not considered a primary responsibility.

This court ruling in China calls for a reevaluation of traditional views on housework and raising children in marriage. The court awarded the woman five times more compensation than she requested, and this case may affect future cases in the country.
