The largest treasure trove dating back to the 1st century AD has been discovered and studied in the British county of North Yorkshire. Analyses have shown that this find allows us to look at the history of the country's formation from a new perspective, writes The Guardian.

It is noted that the treasure was found in 2021 in a field near the village of Melsonby. It was discovered by a local resident named Peter Heads using a metal detector. Realizing that he had come across something unusual, the man turned to Tom Moore, a professor of archaeology at Durham University, who helped organize a full-fledged excavation.

Archaeologists have unearthed more than 800 artifacts dating back to the 1st century AD, the same period when the Romans, led by Emperor Claudius, invaded the British Isles. Scientists believe the finds are linked to the Brigantes, a Celtic tribe that controlled northern England.

The artifacts include chariot parts, 28 wheel sets, harnesses for at least 14 horses, ceremonial spears and two ornately decorated cauldrons. Archaeologists believe one of them was used to mix wine. Some of the decorations are made of coral and colored glass. The treasure is estimated to be worth £254,000.

Professor Moore said the find could shed light on the history of Britain. He says that the northern part of the region was not actually poor, on the contrary, the northern tribes lived relatively prosperously and established very well-developed trade relations.
