Strong earthquake in Myanmar: 694 people killed, many cities destroyed
A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar has killed 694 people and injured 1,670, TASS news agency reported, citing Agence France-Presse sources.

Destruction across the country

According to local authorities, the earthquake that struck on March 28 caused widespread destruction across the country. Witnesses said many residential buildings, administrative buildings and hospitals collapsed in four areas.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located near the city of Mandalay. The earthquakes caused the collapse of a bridge over the Irrawaddy River and partial destruction of the historic Mandalay Palace. Hundreds of people were hospitalized, and a state of emergency was declared in the country.

State of emergency declared in six regions

Officials declared a state of emergency in six regions:

- Sikain,
- Mandalay,
- Pegu,
- Maguey,
- Eastern Shan State,
- The capital Naypyidaw.

Myanmar's Prime Minister, General Min Aung Hlaing, appealed for international assistance.

Rescue efforts are currently underway. Officials say the death toll could rise.
