The speaker of the Dutch parliament has proposed dividing Belgium into two countries
Martin Bosma, the speaker of the Dutch parliament and a member of the far-right Freedom Party (PBB), proposed to the French ambassador François Alabrune to divide Belgium into two states. This was reported by journalist Petra de Koning in the NRC newspaper.

According to the information, this proposal was made during a dinner attended by members of the Dutch parliament. According to the journalist, Bosma said in his words that the Netherlands wants to incorporate Flanders into the kingdom.

"Bosma believes that the Walloon region could be annexed to France," Koning writes.

As Bnnvara TV channel notes, the unification of the Netherlands and Flanders, with a large Flemish-speaking population, is part of the idea of a "Greater Netherlands". This idea is supported by the Dutch right and some members of the Belgian "Flemish Interest" party, which, according to them, has been fighting for independence for a very long time.

In 2021, the mayor of the Belgian city of Antwerp, Bart De Wever, expressed his desire to separate Flanders from Belgium and join it with the Netherlands. He said that he dreamed of welcoming the new day with a united "northern and southern Netherlands". Here, the southern Netherlands refers to the kingdom that borders Flanders.

Belgium has also not officially responded to this proposal so far.

Flanders, or the Flemish region of Belgium, is the northern part of Belgium, where mainly Dutch speakers live. The total area is 13,522 km², which is 44.29% of the territory of Belgium. The main official language in the Flemish region is Dutch, with some restrictions for the French-speaking minority.
