On Tuesday, May 6, the Russian capital Moscow once again suffered a massive attack by unmanned aerial vehicles (drones). This was announced by the city's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin. According to him, the Russian air defense system successfully repelled three drone attacks on Moscow in the second half of the day.
The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the destruction of two drones in the sky of the Moscow region. Although the drones were not allowed to strike, the incident significantly changed the rhythm of life in the city.
Temporary restrictions at airports
Due to the attack, the main Russian aviation hubs, Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports, were forced to temporarily suspend the reception and dispatch of flights. This was officially reported by Rosaviatsia. Flight restrictions were also imposed at the airports of Kaluga, Tambov, Yaroslavl and Nizhny Novgorod.
Earlier, a similar situation was observed at the airports of other major Russian cities - Kazan, Nizhnekamsk, Samara. During the day, the airfields of these cities resumed their work, but until the situation stabilized, many flights were delayed or canceled.
Russian air defense system repels mass attacks
The Russian Defense Ministry has issued an official statement about these large-scale drone attacks carried out by Ukraine. According to the ministry, on Tuesday evening alone, 57 Ukrainian drones were destroyed or intercepted by Russian air defense systems.
The largest number of drones - 31 - were neutralized in the sky of the Bryansk region, followed by 14 in the Kursk region, 7 in the Oryol region, two in the Kaluga and Ryazan regions, and one more drone was destroyed in the Crimea.
Consequences of the night attack in Moscow
The Ministry of Defense also reported that large-scale attacks were carried out on the night of May 6. According to it, a total of 105 drones were destroyed by Russian air defense systems during the night. Among them, 19 drones were neutralized in the Moscow region alone.
The remains of two drones shot down near Moscow were found in different areas of the city. The remains of the first drone were found near a multi-storey residential building on Kashirskoye Highway, and the fragments of the second drone were found in the village of Kuvekino in the New Moscow region.
Territorial defenses are being strengthened
The Moscow city administration is currently planning to take measures to further increase the effectiveness of air defense systems and ensure the safety of the population in the fight against such attacks.
Russian officials blame the Ukrainian Armed Forces for these attacks and, given the possibility that attacks will continue in the future, have issued an order to keep air defense systems in all strategically important cities of the country on high alert.
At the moment, despite the fact that airports and air traffic in Russia have been fully restored, concerns remain among the population and officials. Given the possibility that attacks will continue, recommendations are being made about the need to warn citizens and follow safety measures.
Moscow's air defense forces remain on high alert, and the city's residents also hope that such incidents will not be repeated. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
