During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, fans will have the right to hold peaceful demonstrations on various political and social issues, including support for Palestine. This was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump during a joint press conference at the White House with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
When journalists asked Trump how potential pro-Palestinian protests would be perceived during the tournament and whether protesters might face restrictions, the U.S. president emphasized people's right to freely express their opinions.
"Everyone has the right to express their views, and this right will not be taken from them. However, protests must be peaceful and reasonable. We respect freedom of speech and will allow different perspectives to be expressed during the championship," Trump said in response to journalists.
It is expected that over 8 million fans from around the world will attend this major sporting event. The football celebration will become not only a stage for sports competitions but also an important opportunity for dialogue and the exchange of views among people.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also commented on this issue, stating that the international football organization does not oppose the peaceful expression of political opinions. According to Infantino, FIFA pays special attention to respecting human rights and democratic principles during its competitions.
Recall that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19 at stadiums in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This championship will be the first in history to be hosted simultaneously by three countries and to feature 48 teams.
Previously, international sports events have also seen various political and social demonstrations, but often these actions were met with restrictions from tournament organizers and law enforcement agencies.
This time, the U.S. position may open new opportunities for sports fans and political activists. At the same time, authorities have stated that they will specifically monitor demonstrations to ensure their peaceful and orderly conduct.
