Brazilian scientists discover natural molecule that restores memory

Scientists from leading Brazilian research centers have identified a promising new molecule that could combat cognitive impairments associated with natural aging and dementia. The results of this study were published in the scientific journal Aging Cell.

Is hevin a ray of hope for the brain?

The discovered substance, called hevin, is produced by astrocytes, a type of helper cell in the brain. It strengthens connections between neurons and improves memory function. Interestingly, although hevin did not directly affect the beta-amyloid plaques found in Alzheimer's disease, it helped restore cognitive function in mice.

Neuroplasticity - a new solution for dementia

Scientists believe that these results indicate that neuroplasticity - that is, the ability of the brain to rebuild connections within itself - is one of the main factors in dementia. While the brain's primary function was once thought to be to preserve and protect neurons, attention is now shifting to astrocytes, the brain's "helper" cells.

Astrocytes at the center of new therapies

Astrocytes are now being considered as a new therapeutic target in the fight against dementia and age-related memory loss. Researchers plan to expand testing to develop new drugs based on these cells.

Sleep and memory are closely linked

A separate study by scientists at the University of Texas at San Antonio also found that sleeping more than nine hours a night can impair cognitive function, and this effect is more pronounced in people prone to depression.
