The security situation in Ukraine's Sumy region, which borders Russia, is becoming increasingly tense. According to the head of the regional military administration, Oleg Grigorov, on May 20, large-scale evacuations are underway from settlements in the region.
According to official data, more than 86 thousand citizens live in 202 settlements in the Sumy region. More than 52 thousand of them - or 60.5 percent - have been evacuated to safer places so far. About 2,400 people have been evacuated in the past week alone.
Oleg Grigorov noted that the situation is especially tense in areas close to the border. As a result of artillery and air strikes launched from Russian territory, about 21 thousand people have lost their electricity, and more than 10 thousand have lost their gas supply.
According to him, 13 civilians have been killed as a result of Russian air and gun attacks over the past week. The most serious attack occurred in the city of Belopol, located 10 kilometers from the state border. A bomb attack on a minibus there claimed the lives of several people.
Currently, the Ukrainian government and the local civil defense service continue to evacuate the population to safe areas, distribute aid, and restore infrastructure.
