Israeli soldiers opened fire on diplomats - international criticism (video)

On May 21, Israeli soldiers fired warning shots at an international diplomatic delegation near the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank. According to CNN, the delegation was visiting the camp to assess the humanitarian situation.

The delegation, which included diplomats from Britain, France, Canada, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and dozens of other countries, was moving near the camp when Israeli soldiers opened fire on them.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry described the attack as a “deliberate and unlawful attack” and said it held the Israeli government fully responsible. Video footage of the incident clearly shows soldiers opening fire on the delegation from behind a gate blocking the road.

Israeli side issued a statement

The Israel Defense Forces issued an official statement after the incident. According to it, the delegation deviated from the pre-arranged route and entered the zone of ongoing military operations. Therefore, warning shots were fired and an investigation has now been launched.

Strong response from the UN and EU

The UN and the European Union strongly condemned the incident. Roland Friedrich, the director of the UN aid organization, stressed that this action was another example of “excessive use of force.”

European diplomacy chief Kaia Kallas said that “threats to the lives of diplomats are unacceptable.” Italy, France, Spain and Canada recalled their ambassadors to the Israeli Foreign Ministry to demand an official explanation. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that he “expects a full and urgent explanation of the incident.”

International response is sharp

Turkey, Qatar, Jordan and Egypt also described the incident as an "insulting and irresponsible act." The Western diplomatic community sees the incident as a violation of the law that is taking place within the framework of Israel's military operations in the West Bank.
