Russian scientists have officially announced that a new island has emerged in the Caspian Sea as the sea level has dropped. The expedition members are calling this geographical event historic.
The Caspian Sea has witnessed another surprising geographical change. According to an official statement released by the press service of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a new island has been confirmed to have formed in the northern part of the sea. This unfortunate news was first detected in November 2024 through space images, but at that time the question of the real existence of the island was controversial.
According to information, the expedition was jointly organized by specialists from the Caspian Branch of the Institute of Oceanology, the Astrakhan State Reserve and the Russian Academy of Sciences. During their extensive research, the existence of a new island was proven, located approximately 30 kilometers southwest of the Small Pearl Island.
Sandy-hilly wetland — a new natural formation
Although the expedition participants were unable to enter the interior of the island due to natural conditions and shallow waters, the structure of the island was clearly visible through video footage taken with a quadcopter. Scientists note that so far the island consists of a wetland slightly above sea level, its surface is covered with sand dunes.
Experts say that the island was formed after the spring flood of the Volga River. “When the water level drops to its lowest point, the island becomes even more visible. So far, its structure is simple, but in the future it may become a very important ecosystem,” the Institute of Oceanology said in a statement.
An island with great potential: a new home for birds and seals
Scientists believe that if the Caspian Sea continues to decline, the new island will expand in size. This, in turn, could turn it into a biologically important habitat. In particular, it is likely to become a nesting site for rare bird species and a resting place for Caspian seals.
Currently, experts are working on the formation of a geographical description of the island. In addition, it was reported that proposals are being prepared for its official name.
The shrinking sea: how dangerous is it?
The Caspian Sea has been experiencing serious ecological changes in recent years due to global climate change, reduced river flows and increased evaporation. The appearance of this island is another real confirmation of this process.
Ecologists and geologists warn that such changes could have a negative impact on the overall biosphere of the sea. However, if such newly formed natural areas are properly protected, they can serve as a source of new life in the future.
A new island recently discovered by Russian scientists in the Caspian Sea is not just a geographical discovery, but also vivid evidence of serious changes in the ecological system of the sea. The official name given to it and future scientific research could open a new page in the world geography of this region. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
