Against the backdrop of major political crises in the Middle East, sharp opinions are also being expressed in US political circles. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of disrupting negotiations on the nuclear deal between the US and Iran. He made a strong statement about this on his X social network page.
In his address, Senator Sanders stated: “The Netanyahu government is acting in an extremist direction and consistently fails to comply with international law. This has further increased the level of danger and instability in the world,” he emphasized. In his view, Netanyahu’s unilateral and illegal actions have further complicated the situation in the region.
On the night of June 13, Israeli military forces carried out large-scale attacks on Iran’s nuclear, missile, and military sites, as well as on senior military commanders and leading scientists. As a result of the attacks, leaders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps—Hossein Salami, Mohammad Bagheri, Gholam Ali Rashid, as well as nuclear physicists Fereydoon Abbasi Davani and Azad Mohammad Mahdi Tehranji—were killed. A total of 78 people were killed, and more than 320 were injured.
According to Sanders, these strikes run counter to the US’s main objectives in the region—to resolve problems through diplomatic means and negotiation experience. He said that negotiations were scheduled for Sunday, but Netanyahu canceled them and chose the military path.
In the senator’s statement, it is particularly noted that Netanyahu had previously used child hunger in Gaza for political purposes, and is now dragging the region into a large-scale war, grossly violating international law and the Geneva Conventions, which poses a serious threat to the world.
He also called on the US not to get involved in “Netanyahu’s next war” and to work together with the international community to resolve the conflict peacefully, using all possible means to bring the parties to the negotiating table.
It is known that since April, Iran and the US have held five rounds of talks to restore the nuclear deal. These were mainly held in Oman and in an indirect format. Iran still claims it does not seek to develop nuclear weapons, but refuses to give up uranium enrichment.
At a time when the situation is escalating, the international community is once again realizing the need for serious diplomatic efforts to ensure peace and stability.
