Against the backdrop of intense tension in the Middle East, invisible but significant dialogues continue between Iranian and US diplomats. According to Reuters, citing diplomatic sources, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and the US Special Representative for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, have spoken several times by phone in recent weeks.
The first of these conversations took place at Washington’s initiative. During this call, the US special representative made a new proposal to resolve the Middle Eastern crisis. The main focus of the conversation was on a previously offered idea — the creation of a regional consortium for uranium enrichment. Iran has so far remained committed to its previous position and has rejected this proposal.
Sources report that this week’s conversations differed substantially from previous negotiations. Araghchi told the US representative that if the United States puts pressure on Israel and stops the attacks, Tehran may show readiness for compromise on the nuclear issue. Otherwise, Iran will not support returning to negotiations.
It should be noted that the United States and Iran have held five rounds of negotiations on the nuclear program. However, the next meeting, scheduled for June 15, was canceled. The reason was Israel’s attack on June 13 on Iran’s nuclear and defense facilities, named “Rebellious Lion.” This event led to the beginning of open military confrontation between the two sides.
The latest diplomatic contacts are seen as the last hope for de-escalating the conflict and possibly restoring the nuclear deal. Currently, the world community is paying close attention to Iran’s decisions regarding its nuclear program and the degree of US involvement in the process.
