In Syria, the political and security system has once again witnessed a serious event — one of the most influential people in the country, the cousin of former president Bashar Assad, Wasim Assad, has been arrested. According to the press service of the Syrian Ministry of Internal Affairs, Wasim Assad was detained during a carefully planned operation carried out by the national intelligence and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, near the Lebanese border.
The official statement says that Wasim Assad is suspected of drug trafficking, illegal operations on the black market, and a number of other crimes. This situation indicates that the country’s security structures are strengthening their activities and that the Assad regime is trying to consolidate its influence.
The war in Syria and economic decline
The decade-long war and political crises in Syria have caused the country enormous economic and human losses. According to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, during 13 years of Bashar Assad’s rule, the country suffered damage of at least 500 billion dollars. The destruction of infrastructure, loss of life, and millions of refugees are the main consequences of this conflict.
Changes in the political environment and Assad’s escape to Moscow
In December 2024, after rebel groups took over the city of Damascus, Bashar Assad and his family fled to Russia for safety reasons. Currently, Assad and his relatives are forced to reside permanently in Moscow. This shows that the political regime in Syria has weakened and that power is being tested under internal and external pressures.
What does Wasim Assad’s detention indicate?
The arrest of Wasim Assad is interpreted in different ways by various observers and political analysts. Some consider this part of a “cleansing” policy within the regime, while others see it as a sign that the government’s control is strengthening and that security forces are acting more aggressively. At the same time, it may mean that a fight against corruption, drug trafficking, and illegal business could begin.
The existing political and security problems in Syria, as well as events related to the Assad family and those around them, make the fate of this country even more complicated. The arrest of Wasim Assad shows that the authorities are taking strict measures to preserve their influence. However, it is clear that much more needs to be done to achieve stability and peace in the country. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
