Trial of Bashar al-Assad case begins in Syria

Trial proceedings regarding the case of former President Bashar al-Assad and officials who served in his government have begun in Syria, France 24 reports.
It is reported that the first court hearing on this case took place on April 26. The trial against Bashar al-Assad, who has fled Syria, and his brother Maher al-Assad is being conducted in absentia.
At the same time, their relative and former security official Atif Najib attended the court session in handcuffs. Judge Faxr ad-Din al-Aryan emphasized that these proceedings represent the initial steps within the framework of transitional justice. According to him, these cases involve detainees, defendants present in court, and individuals hiding from justice.
According to sources, these hearings are a preparatory stage for the main trials to be held in the future against Assad and other high-ranking officials.
Atif Najib was detained in January 2025, following the overthrow of the Assad government. He is accused of leading mass arrests and repressions in the Deraa region in 2011.
The civil war in Syria, which lasted 13 years, claimed the lives of more than half a million people and forced millions to flee their homes. The new government has promised to ensure justice for the crimes committed during the Assad era.
The next court hearing is scheduled for May 10.
