A verdict has been announced in one of the most high-profile political and legal cases in Kazakhstan. The country’s former Minister of Justice, Marat Beketayev, has been sentenced to nine years in prison, according to the court's decision. This was reported by official sources, as noted by zakon.kz.
The court found him guilty of several serious charges. Specifically, he was accused of fraud, large-scale embezzlement of state funds, and engaging in illegal entrepreneurial activity. Since the investigation was conducted under the “classified” label, detailed information was not disclosed to the public.
According to available information, Beketayev was detained in October 2023 by law enforcement agencies. The National Anti-Corruption Agency reported that he used his ministerial powers to sign contracts in favor of an affiliated company. However, these services had no practical value and were never rendered, which resulted in significant damage to the state budget.
Notably, the court not only imposed a prison sentence – it also issued a separate ruling to confiscate Beketayev's personal property in favor of the state. This dealt a serious blow to his financial capabilities.
It should be recalled that Beketayev served as Kazakhstan’s Minister of Justice from 2016 to 2022. After completing his term, he worked as an advisor to the Prime Minister in early 2023. However, soon after, a criminal case was initiated against him, and an investigation began.
This case illustrates how seriously Kazakhstan is tackling corruption. It once again confirms that no high-ranking official is exempt from accountability. Analysts and the public view the ruling as a step toward reform and transparency in the country. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
