UK Tightens Oversight of Apple and Google
The United Kingdom’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) plans to designate Apple and Google with “Strategic Market Status” for their dominant role in mobile ecosystems. This status will allow stricter regulatory actions to be taken against these companies.

According to investigations by the CMA, the mobile internet browser market — particularly Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome — does not provide sufficient competition for users and developers. The regulator believes the current situation limits innovation and choice.

CMA head Sarah Cardell stated that changes in these sectors are important for the UK economy and will help local app developers stay at the forefront of global innovation.

Apple and Google, however, oppose these proposals. Google called the move “unjustified and baseless,” while Apple expressed concern that the new rules could weaken user privacy and security protections.

A final decision will be made by October 22, 2025. The regulator has also published a roadmap outlining potential further measures.
