Medvedev’s response to Trump’s ultimatum: “Not a game” for Russia

Donald Trump’s newly set 10–12 day period for resolving the Russia–Ukraine conflict has sparked serious debates in the international political arena, reported tass.ru. Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev made a sharp statement about this demand, calling the American leader’s new approach a “game of ultimatums.”

According to Medvedev, every new ultimatum destroys the essence of negotiations and makes the situation even more complicated. He especially noted that Donald Trump, who previously set a 50-day period for ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, has now sharply shortened this to expecting results within 10–12 days. Medvedev interpreted this as a threat, stating: “Every new ultimatum is a step towards a threat and war. This is not about Russia and Ukraine, but about the internal politics of the USA itself,” he emphasized.

The Russian Security Council’s deputy head also addressed Donald Trump, urging him not to forget that Russia is neither Israel nor even Iran. In his words, the American president should understand the position and historical experience of Russia on the international stage.

At the same time, Donald Trump announced that if negotiations between Russia and Ukraine do not yield results in 10–12 days, then countries importing oil and gas from Russia will face 100 percent tariffs. This could also mark a new stage in international economic relations.

According to observers, Medvedev’s answer and Trump’s ultimatum have become another confirmation of a new spirit and tension emerging in Russia–USA relations. How the situation in the region will develop and in which direction the negotiations will proceed still remains a big question.
