A court in Moldova's capital, Chișinău, has sentenced Gagauzia's regional leader Evghenia Gutsul to seven years in prison. She was found guilty of illegally importing funds from Russia and financing the banned “Shor” political party.
Following the verdict, protests erupted near the courthouse, with hundreds of both supporters and opponents clashing. Law enforcement quickly moved in to restore order.
Political analysts warn that the sentence could trigger increased activity from pro-Russian forces in the country. Additionally, the ruling may serve as a deterrent to voters considering selling their votes in the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for September 28.
The Moldovan government has emphasized that such strong actions are necessary to fight corruption and ensure fair and transparent elections.
