An official letter sent by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to the Nobel Peace Committee has sparked new debates in global politics. In this appeal, the contribution of US President Donald Trump to international peace was particularly emphasized, and it was proposed to nominate him as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize, according to the country's press agencies.
The letter, dated August 7, 2025, was written by Hun Manet, who introduced himself as the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia and stated that it was an honor to recognize the historical and serious efforts of the honorable Donald Trump, the 45th and 47th President of the United States, in promoting peace.
“A model of political intellect and restraint” — Trump’s leadership image
In his letter, Hun Manet described Trump as “a leader with unique political intelligence and the ability to accurately assess situations,” and expressed sincere gratitude for his mediation in resolving Cambodia’s border dispute with Thailand.
The letter also noted that Trump had achieved remarkable success in restoring peace and stability not only in Southeast Asia but also in “some of the most unstable and complex regions of the world.”
Bloody clashes and halted conflict: was US influence enough?
It should be recalled that on July 24, 2025, tensions rose at the border between Thailand and Cambodia, leading to a series of armed clashes. Both countries officially reported dozens of casualties and the evacuation of thousands.
On July 29, delegations from both sides met in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur and reached an agreement to cease fire starting from midnight.
On the eve of the truce, Donald Trump made a public statement, declaring that “millions of lives were at risk” and warned that if the conflict was not stopped, the US would withdraw from any trade agreements. According to him, this threat and diplomatic pressure led both countries to achieve peace.
Fight for peace: political move or reality?
Cambodia's initiative has sparked different opinions on the international stage. Some analysts interpret Hun Manet’s move as a diplomatic effort to strengthen ties with the US, while others support it as a genuine act for peace.
In any case, the debates around Donald Trump once again bring public attention to how the Nobel Prize is shaped by political choices. Now, all eyes are on Oslo — the day the prize winner is announced.
There have been controversial peace prize decisions in history, but how will this nomination be evaluated? The answer will be revealed soon.
