92-year-old president runs for eighth term
The Constitutional Council of Cameroon has registered 92-year-old President Paul Biya for the presidential election scheduled for October 12. If Biya wins, he could remain in power until he is nearly 100 years old.

Out of 83 candidates, only 12 were allowed to run, while the rest were disqualified due to incomplete paperwork, failure to pay the deposit, or multiple candidates being nominated from the same party.

Biya’s main rivals include his former allies Bello Bouba Maigari and Issa Tchiroma Bakari, young politician Cabral Libii, international anti-corruption lawyer Akere Muna, and Social Democratic Front leader Joshua Osih.

Analysts say that Libii or Muna could be the strongest opposition candidates. However, Maigari and Tchiroma, who have been in the government system for many years, do not appear trustworthy to opposition voters.

Experts stress that unless the opposition unites around a single candidate, Biya’s victory will be easy. In 1992, he barely won against a united opposition candidate, and today, without such unity, his chances of securing an eighth term are high.
