In the city of Atyrau, Kazakhstan, an unusual, almost movie-like incident occurred — due to a surname mix-up in a detention facility, the wrong prisoner was released. This was reported by Rustem Tungyshbayev, Deputy Chairman of the Committee of the Penal Enforcement System of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.
According to official information, the person who was released turned out to be a completely different inmate. The similarity in first and last names misled the staff, who then processed the documents for early release. Most surprisingly, the papers were signed by several detention facility officials.
As reported by the newspaper “Ak Zhaik,” after the mistake was discovered, a criminal case was opened for the violation. The mistakenly released person was quickly detained again and returned to the facility.
Rustem Tungyshbayev stressed that the officials responsible for this incident will definitely be held accountable. He added that an internal investigation is underway, and additional control mechanisms will be implemented to prevent such errors in the future.
Local residents and social media users reacted differently to the incident — some called it “the most astonishing prison blunder of our time,” while others pointed out that such negligence could lead to serious consequences.
