It has been reported that the USA and Russia have reached a new agreement on providing security guarantees to Ukraine. According to the special representative of the US President, Steven Whitcoff, the next step in this agreement depends on Ukraine.
On August 16, Whitcoff stated that it is important how the Ukrainian government will align with these conditions, meaning whether Kyiv will agree to them. "Everything depends on Ukraine," he said. He also mentioned that this issue would be discussed in a meeting between the leaders of Ukraine and the USA, Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky.
In addition, on August 18, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and other European leaders will also visit the White House. After the talks with Putin, Trump gave an interview to Fox News, stating that the agreement is close, but Ukraine needs to officially approve it. According to Trump, "everything depends on President Zelensky."
According to The New York Times, Donald Trump proposed to European leaders that the entire Donbas region be handed over to Russia.
If this agreement is implemented, Europe and the USA may have the opportunity to reconsider their strategy regarding Ukraine's future. After this meeting, decisions may be made regarding military actions in Ukraine.
