Today marks 234 years since the first major uprising against slavery in human history.
On August 23, 1791, enslaved Africans on the island of Santo-Domingo in the Caribbean rose up against French colonial rule in pursuit of freedom and justice.
What followed was nearly five years of bloody struggle, at the end of which the formerly enslaved not only gained their freedom but founded the first independent Black republic — Haiti.
This historical revolt became a turning point in the global fight against slavery and a milestone for human rights.
The United Nations has recognized August 23 as the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition. This date serves as a reminder that freedom and dignity must be guaranteed for every person.
